Located in the historic center of Miranda do Douro, the Museu da Terra de Miranda occupies the city's former Domus Municipalis, a building dating back to the 17th century that also served as the Municipal Jail.
Since 1982, the building has housed the social, cultural, religious and economic history of the communities of Terra de Miranda, through the ethnographic and archaeological collections on display.
Visiting the Museu da Terra de Miranda is like traveling among the most diverse objects, which are the starting point for discovering the ancestral heritage and daily life of Miranda, where agricultural work, pastoralism, traditional crafts and domestic activities take place, revealed above all by the winter rituals, so particular to the Northeast of Trás-os-Montes, without ever forgetting the Mirandese language.
Right next door, the Concatedral de Miranda, dating back to the 16th century and classified as a National Monument, invites you to visit. Inside, the image of the Baby Jesus of Cartolina, which has become an icon of Miranda do Douro, stands out.
Among other “treasures”, find Os Retratos dos Meses da Concatedral de Miranda do Douro, a set of twelve panels painted in Antwerp, around 1580, in the workshop of the master painter Pieter Balten and which constitute an extremely rare example of an iconography practically absent in the Portuguese artistic heritage.
